FPRA Annual Conference: Doris Fleischman Award

Posted by Chris Gent on August 8, 2006 at 10:20 PM

At the conclusion of tonight's Golden Image Awards ceremony, three individual awards were given. The first award was the 2006 Doris Fleischman Award.

The Doris Fleischman Award honors unrecognized contributions an individual FPRA member has made to the public relations profession and/or to FPRA. In essence, this is an “unsung hero" award intended to reward that individual who consistently provides support and assistance to the Association.

The award was established to honor the achievements and contributions of Doris Fleischman, business partner and wife of Edward L. Bernays, the “father” of public relations. It honors those FPRA members who, like Ms. Fleischman, make contributions to the field of public relations through consistent, tireless efforts. It is meant to honor a member for his/her “behind the scenes” work and FPRA volunteer efforts that go unnoticed by chapter members and are not recognized by other awards programs.

This year's winner could not attend the Golden Image Award gala, so the award was presented to her by members of the Pensacola Chapter at their July board meeting. Click the image below to view the acceptance video. The proud recipient is...

EILEEN PERRIGO, APR - Instructor & Internship Coordinator, University of West Florida - Member, Pensacola Chapter

The Golden Image Awards have become a standard of public relations excellence in the state of Florida. Winners demonstrate the very best examples of innovation, planning and design. The awards competition includes four divisions of categories: Public Relations Programs, Printed Tools of Public Relations, Audio/Visual Tools of Public Relations and Student Projects in Public Relations. To qualify for judging, an entry must incorporate sound public relations research and planning. Entries also must meet the highest standard of production, execution and evaluation of results and budget.

Thanks to Trista Wallace, APR and her committee for putting together a wonderful evening!

And the winners are...

What Do You Think of the Conference Coverage?

Posted by on August 8, 2006 at 05:25 PM

I just received a comment from a not-so anonymous poster on a post I did. I figured it would be a good time to ask everyone participating in what you think of the conference coverage thus far. Tell us the good, the bad and the ugly. We'd prefer if you left your e-mail so we could respond to you, but if you feel the need to be anonymous, go ahead.

What has been your favorite portion of the conference coverage?

Do you like the fact that we've included commentary on the sessions or would you just prefer the facts from presentations?

Do you like the fun stuff and hallway interviews?

Suggestions?

FPRA Annual Conference: Afternoon Meltdown

Posted by on August 8, 2006 at 02:34 PM

Something new this year is the inclusion of more networking time! Because the FPRA conference is always jam packed during both day and night with activities, this is a very welcome addition.

FPRA realized that while members enjoy the professional development opportunities, we really wish we had just an hour or two during the day to network with our fellow professionals from throughout the state.

Kudos to Suzanne Sparling, APR and her conference committee for adding this enhancement to this year's conference.

FPRA Annual Conference: A Case Study - The Terri Schiavo Case

FPRA Annual Conference: Terri Schiavo

Posted by Chris Gent on August 8, 2006 at 01:40 PM
Terri Schiavo

Next up is a presentation on the Terri Schiavo case.

For those of you new to the case (or from outside Florida), the case was about a woman from St. Petersburg, Fla. whose medical and family circumstances and legal battles fueled intense media attention and led to several high-profile court decisions and involvement by politicians and interest groups.

Schiavo, then 26, collapsed in her home in 1990 and experienced respiratory and cardiac arrest. She remained in a coma for ten weeks. Within three years, she was diagnosed as being in a persistent vegetative state (PVS).

The legal history around the Schiavo case included fourteen appeals and numerous motions, petitions, and hearings in the Florida courts; five suits in Federal District Court; Florida legislation struck down by the Supreme Court of Florida; a subpoena by a congressional committee in an attempt to qualify Schiavo for witness protection; federal legislation; and four denials of certiorari from the Supreme Court of the United States.

Ultimately, Terri's husband won the legal right to have her feeding tube removed on March 18, 2005. She died thirteen days later at a Pinellas Park hospice on March 31, 2005, at the age of 41.

We'll have insight on the presentation afterward...

FPRA Annual Conference: Roundtable Lunch Discussions

Posted by Bob O'Malley, APR on August 8, 2006 at 01:17 PM

The FPRA Counselors' Network hosted 12 roundtable discussions on various public relation topics. Given my interest, aspirations and experience, I attended the discussion about government relations and public affairs, which was facilitated by Lisa Hall, APR, CPRC. The discussion was very interactive and informative. I enjoy learning opportunities that involve discussion and debate, and therefore I enjoyed the session. I've heard from other members who participated in other discussions, and they also found the session to be a valuable experience.

FPRA Annual Conference: To Give or Not to Give: Working with Not-for-Profits

Posted by Josh Hallett on August 8, 2006 at 10:35 AM

This breakout session featured a panel of speakers:

Jennifer Bush, Manager of Special Projects, Publix Supermarkets
David Clark, APR, Director of Development, Children's Home Society
Rick Oppenheim, APR, CPRC, Principal, Senior Counselor, RB Oppenheim Associates

The inspiration for the panel was a session that was supposed to be held by PRSA in Jacksonville, but was canceled. A number of people felt the topic was good enough to develop a breakout session. The issue is dealing with pro-bono clients and not-for-profits, on both sides of the equation.

FPRA Annual Conference: Bringing PR to the CEO Level

Posted by on August 8, 2006 at 10:30 AM
"Whatever you do, do it on purpose."

That's the main message from Dr. Robert J. Parkinson from Northwestern University. His presentation is focused on ways to enhance your CEO's message and how to help him/her deliver powerful speeches and presentations.

Dr. Bob Parkinson 2

Although I'd typically advise most people against opening with a joke, Dr. Parkinson did a terrific job and had us laughing from the get-go. I could tell this would be a great session.

He asked us to cross our arms. Then, he had us cross our arms with the other arm on top. It felt quite unnatural. He did this to demonstrate:

"The challenge is not just to feel good. The challenge is to be good."

Both information and image are important, but image is extremely significant, especially with your CEO. Why? Because making a good impression consists of how you look (55%), how you sound (38%) and content (7%).

Dr. Bob Parkinson at podium

And it only takes eight seconds to make a good impression. If it takes you a few minutes to get going during a presentation, you've lost it.

During a presentation, messages must be:
clear - to the audience; not the presenter
concise - fit within the timeframe; don't exceed
complete - very clear beginning, development and ending

The opening should include the point of the presentation. Let the audience know why they are there and where you stand. If you don't do this, you will lose your audience.

The sequence should include: what? why? how?

The ending of an effective presentation should answer two questions:
1. What do you want your audience to do?
2. When do you want them to do it?

FPRA Annual Conference: Dino - Dog or Dinosaur?

Is Dino from the Flintstones a Dog or a Dinosaur?

Dino!

That little item popped up during the Q&A after Shirley's keynote. Context: at the Cartoon Network they actually had a meeting debating that subject. What do you think?

FPRA Annual Conference: Deep Thoughts by Bob O'Malley

Posted by Bob O'Malley, APR on August 8, 2006 at 09:25 AM

Actually, the title should be deep thoughts by Grace Murray Hooper. In her Dillin Keynote Address, Shirley Powell shared the following quote from Admiral Grace Murray Hooper:

"A ship in port is safe, but that's not what ships are built for."

Although Shirley's entire presentation was excellent, the quote was especially relevant to me since I will soon change jobs. Sometimes, the smallest things can make an impact on you.

FPRA Annual Conference: Dillin Keynote - Hamburgers, Vomit and Presidents - Lessons Learned from a Career in Media and Entertainment

Posted by Josh Hallett on August 8, 2006 at 09:17 AM

The second day of the 68th Annual Conference began with the Dillin Keynote Address. Shirley Powell, Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications, Turner Broadcasting led a humorous and introspective look at media and public relations.

Shirley Powell

Shirley represents all the brands under the Turner name, that includes: TBS, TNT, CNN, Cartoon Network, Boomerang, CourtTV, Turner Classic Movies and the Atlanta Braves. In many ways her office acts as a pr agency for these brands. Her office handles general corporate responsibility. Turner is of course a subsidiary of TimeWarner which includes HBO, AOL, Warner Brothers and Time, Inc. In her role, unfortunately she has to take on a 'squeaky wheel gets the oil' approach.

One of the most important lessons she learned early on in her career with Curley & Pynn was: Present Solutions not Problems. It's through failures and mistakes that we learn.

Shirley Powell

The first major campaign Shirley worked on was the opening of Universal Studios in Orlando. Opening day arrived and none of the rides worked. During the day she had to watch as her media contact did report after report that nothing was working. That wasn't something that any pr internship had taught her to deal with.

That's what Josh told me this morning after my lack of posting yesterday.

However, as Bob noted yesterday, the wireless account only allows for two users and there are four of us. While Bob did decide to shell out the $9.95 per day for access, I did not. I have my Treo for work but was not able to post from it.

I'll be updating throughout the day and giving you a recap of yesterday soon.
