FPRA Annual Conference: Hope You Had the Time of Your Life

Posted by Chris Gent on August 9, 2006 at 12:10 PM

The 68th conference of the Florida Public Relations Association has wrapped up in Amelia Island, Fla.

Lots of great sessions, networking, awards, fun... and even a few surprises. It's been fun. Thanks, Suzanne Sparling, APR for all your hard work in pulling this conference off.

We've also had lots of fun with this conference blog. Thanks to those of you who visited, who commented and sent nice notes along the way. We tried our best to convey to you the look, feel and flavor of an FPRA annual conference. I hope we succeeded.

We hope that those of you who visited will make plans now to attend next year's conference in Sarasota. The investment will pay huge dividends for both your current employer and your career as a public relations professional.

In closing, we wanted to share the final Web stats for the entire three days conference. The event may be over, but the information shared these past few days will remain on this blog for you to refer back to in the future.

Total unique visitors: 1,264

Total page views: 4,775

And to borrow a line from a recent Green Day song:

"It's something unpredictable

but in the end it's right.

hope you had the time of your life."

We hope you did.

FPRA Annual Conference: Thoughts on Communications, Life and PR

Posted by Josh Hallett on August 9, 2006 at 11:46 AM

Mark Ziegler is an Associate in Communications, College of Communication at Florida State University. Mark is a very energetic speaker to say the least. His style is very engaging. He opened his session with a quick story about an FPRA conference he attended almost 10 years ago in Boca. His credit card had been stolen during the event, so when he thinks about FPRA he always checks his wallet :-)

Mark Ziegler

Mark had intended to go to medical school, but he saw the signs when he was studying. During gross anatomy he had trouble opening the chest cavity. He said, "this is a sign."

FPRA Annual Conference: Doris Fleischman Award

Posted by Chris Gent on August 8, 2006 at 10:20 PM

At the conclusion of tonight's Golden Image Awards ceremony, three individual awards were given. The first award was the 2006 Doris Fleischman Award.

The Doris Fleischman Award honors unrecognized contributions an individual FPRA member has made to the public relations profession and/or to FPRA. In essence, this is an “unsung hero" award intended to reward that individual who consistently provides support and assistance to the Association.

The award was established to honor the achievements and contributions of Doris Fleischman, business partner and wife of Edward L. Bernays, the “father” of public relations. It honors those FPRA members who, like Ms. Fleischman, make contributions to the field of public relations through consistent, tireless efforts. It is meant to honor a member for his/her “behind the scenes” work and FPRA volunteer efforts that go unnoticed by chapter members and are not recognized by other awards programs.

This year's winner could not attend the Golden Image Award gala, so the award was presented to her by members of the Pensacola Chapter at their July board meeting. Click the image below to view the acceptance video. The proud recipient is...

fleishman

EILEEN PERRIGO, APR - Instructor & Internship Coordinator, University of West Florida - Member, Pensacola Chapter

FPRA Annual Conference: Afternoon Meltdown

Posted by on August 8, 2006 at 02:34 PM

Something new this year is the inclusion of more networking time! Because the FPRA conference is always jam packed during both day and night with activities, this is a very welcome addition.

FPRA realized that while members enjoy the professional development opportunities, we really wish we had just an hour or two during the day to network with our fellow professionals from throughout the state.

Kudos to Suzanne Sparling, APR and her conference committee for adding this enhancement to this year's conference.

FPRA Annual Conference: To Give or Not to Give: Working with Not-for-Profits

Jennifer Bush, Manager of Special Projects, Publix Supermarkets
David Clark, APR, Director of Development, Children's Home Society
Rick Oppenheim, APR, CPRC, Principal, Senior Counselor, RB Oppenheim Associates

The inspiration for the panel was a session that was supposed to be held by PRSA in Jacksonville, but was canceled. A number of people felt the topic was good enough to develop a breakout session. The issue is dealing with pro-bono clients and not-for-profits, on both sides of the equation.

FPRA Annual Conference: Bringing PR to the CEO Level

Posted by on August 8, 2006 at 10:30 AM
"Whatever you do, do it on purpose."

That's the main message from Dr. Robert J. Parkinson from Northwestern University. His presentation is focused on ways to enhance your CEO's message and how to help him/her deliver powerful speeches and presentations.

Dr. Bob Parkinson 2

Although I'd typically advise most people against opening with a joke, Dr. Parkinson did a terrific job and had us laughing from the get-go. I could tell this would be a great session.

He asked us to cross our arms. Then, he had us cross our arms with the other arm on top. It felt quite unnatural. He did this to demonstrate:

"The challenge is not just to feel good. The challenge is to be good."

Both information and image are important, but image is extremely significant, especially with your CEO. Why? Because making a good impression consists of how you look (55%), how you sound (38%) and content (7%).

Dr. Bob Parkinson at podium

And it only takes eight seconds to make a good impression. If it takes you a few minutes to get going during a presentation, you've lost it.

During a presentation, messages must be:
clear - to the audience; not the presenter
concise - fit within the timeframe; don't exceed
complete - very clear beginning, development and ending

The opening should include the point of the presentation. Let the audience know why they are there and where you stand. If you don't do this, you will lose your audience.

The sequence should include: what? why? how?

The ending of an effective presentation should answer two questions:
1. What do you want your audience to do?
2. When do you want them to do it?

FPRA Annual Conference: Dillin Keynote - Hamburgers, Vomit and Presidents - Lessons Learned from a Career in Media and Entertainment

Posted by Josh Hallett on August 8, 2006 at 09:17 AM

The second day of the 68th Annual Conference began with the Dillin Keynote Address. Shirley Powell, Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications, Turner Broadcasting led a humorous and introspective look at media and public relations.

Shirley Powell

Shirley represents all the brands under the Turner name, that includes: TBS, TNT, CNN, Cartoon Network, Boomerang, CourtTV, Turner Classic Movies and the Atlanta Braves. In many ways her office acts as a pr agency for these brands. Her office handles general corporate responsibility. Turner is of course a subsidiary of TimeWarner which includes HBO, AOL, Warner Brothers and Time, Inc. In her role, unfortunately she has to take on a 'squeaky wheel gets the oil' approach.

One of the most important lessons she learned early on in her career with Curley & Pynn was: Present Solutions not Problems. It's through failures and mistakes that we learn.

Shirley Powell

The first major campaign Shirley worked on was the opening of Universal Studios in Orlando. Opening day arrived and none of the rides worked. During the day she had to watch as her media contact did report after report that nothing was working. That wasn't something that any pr internship had taught her to deal with.

FPRA Annual Conference: Protecting PR Staff From Lawsuits

Posted by on August 7, 2006 at 10:50 AM

Note: This is from Monday's Breakout Session 1B.

This session was led by Karen Morinelli, a lawyer from Ruden McClosky. I thought this would be an interesting precursor to Andrea Weckerle's upcoming session at BlogOrlando. After all, you can never get too much free advice from lawyers.

Karen covered the role PR people play in crisis communications and whether or not what is said is protected.

Here are the main points from the session:

If you feel uncomfortable, always consult a lawyer.

Never assume there is a privelege. Unless there is an exception, there is no privelege.

Professionals in the public sector are advised not to write anything.

Don't keep drafts, etc. because they could be used against you.

Defamation - making someone look bad.

Libel - defamation in print.

Slander - spoken defamation.

Always keep a lawyer on your crisis management team.

"Think before you put pen to paper and what role you play." - Karen Morinelli

FPRA Annual Conference: Word of Mouth Marketing

Posted by Josh Hallett on August 7, 2006 at 10:49 AM

DSC_0001.JPG Dixie Punsky with Aetna led the breakout session on Word of Mouth Marketing (WOM). Dixie noted that WOM is the oldest form of advertising and public relations. Dixie asked the audience about what products and services they have purchased because of a friend's recommendation. Examples included restaurants, lawn services and even FPRA. We are our friend's yellow pages.

Organic WOM occurs naturally when people become advocates of a brand. This is usually based upon superior customer service or superior products. There is no outside assistance form the brand. (improving the product not the pitch).

Amplified WOM occurs when the brand works to generate WOM. This can involve seeding WOM and engaging influencers within certain markets.

Dixie outlined seven truths of WOM:

1. The power of word of mouth is staggering: The human channel is the most influential.
2. The old rules no longer apply: Traditional channels will not reach all consumers. This is a product of fragmentation.
3. There are influencers in every category: These are not just early-adopters of geeks. This can be moms!
4. Lists and databases are ineffective ways to reach customers: Consumers are market savvy and don't link junk mail.
5. Know thy influencer: Learn about your target market, interact with them.
6. Movements don't always start in large urban markets: don't overlook the smaller markets, smaller markets can see larger markets for less money.
7. Experience and trial are the key to winning consumers: speak openly and honestly, no hype.

FPRA Annual Conference: What do I wear?

Posted by on August 6, 2006 at 09:54 PM

And how many outfits should I bring with me? Ah, the questions every woman asks herself before leaving on a trip.

I'm still at home in Orlando and will be driving over to Amelia Island early in the morning with a friend. Therefore, I'm still trying to decide what to bring with me--and how much of it I can actually fit into my suitcase(s).

I quickly glanced at the conference brochure as a reminder of events.

During the day
In previous years, I opted for very professional suits. However, it was quite warm and I wasn't very comfortable. Based on this and the fact that we are going to be on the beach, I think I'm going slightly less formal this year. Just to be safe, I called two of my closest FPRA friends who were already soaking up the sun in Amelia Island today to see what they are wearing to the conference. Both agreed with me.

After the sessions but before the evening events
As a native Floridian, you can find me at the pool or the beach. I'm bringing some comfy beach clothes (and sunscreen).

Scholarship fundraiser
For me, the scholarship fundraiser is one of the highlights of the conference. It's a great chance to get to know other PR professionals from across the state in a relaxed atmosphere. Based on this, I'll be wearing something fun.

Golden Image Awards
The awards ceremony is the event of the year for many FPRA members. It is formal attire and I plan on dressing up like everyone else.

I'm off to finish packing. I'll see you bright and early at the conference.

FPRA Annual Conference: All That Glitters is Golden...

There are several different levels of awards:

Award of Distinction - presented to all entries that meet the standard of excellence set by a panel of judges.

Golden Image Award - Presented to top-scoring entry in each category.

Judges’ Award - Presented by judges for an outstanding entry that achieves maximum results while using a minimum amount of money.

Sometimes when I am covering conferences via blog I will write some boilerplate items in advance to save time during the event. For the golf tournament today I wrote the following snippet:

You can always be sure to find Jay Rayburn, Rick Oppenheim and Tom Preston in a group at the FPRA Golf Tournament.

Turns our you can't. Jay was not feeling well last night so he will be arriving later today and Tom will not be making it to conference at all. Rick is all alone....

Rick is all alone....

I arrived just in time to head out to the golf course to watch/photograph some of the action. Watch for photos soon!
